Good scoring in the Colonial Mutual Trophy

THE Colonial Mutual Trophy was played for at the weekend with good scoring with eight players bettering their handicaps.

David Milliken (18) - just back from his honeymoon - opened with 22 front nine points before adding 20 for a winning total of 42 points. David played steady golf with seven pars 10 bogies and only the one double bogie to win by one shot from runner-up Maurice Torrington (13) who opened with 19 before adding 22 points, highlights of his back nine were birdies at the 13th and 18th holes to nudge Ronnie Milliken (7) into third spot with nines of 22 and 19.

Ronnie opened with nine pars and a birdie at the 10th before taking what proved a costly double bogie at the 11th.

He dropped another shot at the 12th before finishing with four straight pars, also 41 points.

The twos kitty was shared by M.Torrington (2) and Jimmy Kelly.

The previous weekend competition was for the Spanboard Cup.

In a low scoring event two players finished on 38 points. After the tie break deciding the outcome with both scoring nines of 18 and 20 it was Tom Boyd (12) won by virtue of a birdie two at the last hole. Sam Reid (17) had to settle for second place.

Third prize went to Tommy McCloskey (26) with 37 points, 20 out and 17 back nine points just holding off the challenge from Christopher Dempsey (17) with nines of 21 and 16.

Twos were scored by T.Boyd (two) W.Pyper D.Wilson and M.Kane.

Ronnie Engall and Colin McConaghie with a home draw progressed to the 4th round of the Irish Mail on Sunday with a win over Lyle Foster and his partner from Galgorm Castle, both playing off nine handicaps. The match finished on the 18th. Green with the home players winning one up.
