Great contest for Lagan Valley AC

LAGAN Valley Athletics Club had another great competition last Thursday evening on the new Mary Peters track, with over 300 athletes taking centre stage and competing against each other.

Lagan Valley AC are deligted to announce that this year’s Super 5 series will be supported by Power NI and will be known as The Power NI Super 5 Series. Throughout its history Lagan Valley has been at the forefront of providing competition for athletes of all ages with an emphasis on the young and developing athletes. The format of the competition this year will involve a series of 5 meetings all on Thursday nights at the Mary Peters track. The competition on May 2 saw Jason Harvey from Crusaders AC storm to victory in the 200metres.

The girls 800metres saw Zoe Carruthers from City of Lisburn win the U17 race with Lois Hagen from Willowfield coming 2nd and Bridie Magee from Balmoral Harriers taking 3rd. The U15 girls 800metres was won by Madison Bower of City of Lisburn, 2nd was Laura Gardener from East Down and 3rd was Emma Hutchinson from Ballymena and Antrim.

Zoe Dickson from Lagan Valley jumped a personal best of 10.60 in the triple jump which secured her a silver medal. T

While the Lagan Valley Thursday meetings began as a ‘Best of Belfast’ promotion in 1991 their origins can be traced back to AAA five star meetings held on the old cinder track at Shaws Bridge in 1970s. Since that time Thursday night at the Mary Peters track has become synonymous with top class athletes.

The next competition will be on May 30 and the club is trying to encourage more young people from all ages and abilities to participate in athletics.
