Great display from U7s against Annalong

ON Saturday Rathfriland played Annalong in the Games Development Centre in Newry.

This turned out to be a very entertaining game with end to end action.

In the first period Annalong started strongly and scored early on, but Rathfriland soon settled down with Callum Weir and Alfie McConville starting to take control of the Rathfriland defence.

Rathfriland were soon on the score sheet with Eoghan Travers scoring two early goals. Aaron Monaghan made a great run down the wing before taking a shot to score Rathfriland’s third goal.

Annalong hit back with a couple of goals of their own but then Callum Travers scored his first two goals of the day to restore Rathfriland’s lead.

Rathfriland started to play some great football and created lots of chances as they dominated the first period. Jake Gracey and Aaron Monaghan scored a goal each towards the end of the first period to increase Rathfriland’s lead.

At the other end Ronan Burns pulled of a number of great saves to ensure Annalong didn’t score anymore goals in the first period.

At the start of the second period Eoghan Travers completed his hat-trick with a great shot from a wide angle. Rathfriland were now starting to play like a unit as they passed the ball around the pitch.

Eoin Gribben got his first goal of the day as he broke out of the midfield with a surging run and didn’t give the Annalong keeper a chance with his shot.

Soon after Ronan Burns showed his class as he rounded a couple of the Annalong defenders before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the Annalong goal.

Annalong didn’t lie down as they scored a couple of goals to reduce Rathfriland lead. Rathfriland settled down again with Callum Weir putting in some great tackles in defence to make sure Annalong didn’t score again.

Rathfriland started to play some lovely football and Callum Travers completing his Hat-trick with a great long range effort.

Callum’s older brother Eoghan Travers was not to be out done as he went on to get his fourth goal of the game.

Aaron Monaghan had a great game in Rathfriland’s midfield as he finished the game with 4 goals. Alfie McConville worked tirelessly in Rathfriland’s defence and almost got on the score sheet only to see his long range effort come back off the post.

Eoin Gribben completed the scoring for Rathfriland after a great run from Jake Gracey down the right wing.

This was a great display from Rathfriland who had a large support from the sidelines, well done boys.
