Great home win for Lurgan Ladies

LURGAN Ladies had an encouraging 18-shot win over Whitehead last Thursday afternoon on the local green. From being all square at 16–16 they were in the lead for the rest of the match and finished eighteen shots ahead; taking a well earned five points to improve their league position.

On Rink 1 Edith Hobson, Jennifer McVeigh, Molly Ward and Winifred Kirkwood, skip, had a great game against C Keats’ Whitehead rink, having gone into a convincing lead of 10– 0 after fifth end. Having dropped a three-shot on the next Kirkwood’s rink resumed its attack to take another ten shots over the next three ends to take an unassailable seventeen shot lead. The visitors tried to make a comeback but the Lurgan rink stuck to the task to win the rink 27–11.

Angela Thompson, skip, ably assisted by Molly McBarron, Beth Wilson and Gloria White recorded a good win on Rink 2 against a Whitehead rink skipped by R Lyle. Down by a slender one shot at the sixth end they took seven shots off the next four ends and led 9–4 after the tenth. An excellent triple-shot win on the eleventh end and single shots off the last four ends gave them a valuable five-shot rink win.

Irene Cunningham, Dot McCoy, Geraldine Tallon and Iris Anderson, skip, had a very close run on Rink 3 against a troublesome Whitehead rink skipped by M McHugh and were unfortunate to lose by just one shot. Anderson’s rink was only a shot adrift after five ends but were unfortunate to lose some closely fought ends to be 11–3 down after the tenth.

However Anderson inspired her rink and they responded well to take seven shots off the next three ends to reduce the Whitehead’s lead to 11–10. The home rink was down 16–10 after the sixteenth end but made a valiant effort over the last two ends to win the rink but the visitors won 16–15.

On Rink 4 for Lurgan were Gwen Hayes, Catherine McGrail, Nora Johnston and Genny Little, skip who faced the Whitehead rink skipped by S McMurtry. Little’s rink were in difficulty during the first half of their game and trailed 10–1 after ten ends, but they rallied and won the next three ends to reduce the deficit to five shots. McMurtry’s rink fought back and increased their lead to 14–5 after the twelfth end. The home rink produced a tremendous finish by collecting ten shots off the next five ends to take the lead by 15–14 going into the last end, but they were unfortunate to lose a three-shot to allow McMurtry’s rink to win 17–15.
