Great round from Deaglan in league

Golfers have, over the past few months been accustomed to the bitter winds, rain, sleet and snow blowing in from the Arctic. It was almost surreal to be playing in almost perfect conditions.

Rodger Erwin and Deaglan O’Hagan took full advantage of the spring like conditions. Four handicapper Deaglan, playing the back nine, shot probably the lowest score by any Edenmore golfer throughout this season’s Winter League.

His round included a superb eagle three at the par five fifteenth hole, followed by a tap in for a birdie at the difficult par three seventeenth. He hit a total of only 33 shots for a magnificent three under par for victory in the gross competition.

His counterpart in the front nine was Rodger Erwin who plays off a handicap of nine. He shot one under par 34 for his first gross victory of the winter season.

The overall winners in the competition were Isaac Mulholland who shot a brilliant 25 points on the front nine. Keith Robinson also shot 25 points to win the equivalent competition on the back nine.

The section winners were as follows:

Section one (0-13) on the front nine, the winner was Stephen Hylands scoring 22 points winning on countback from Paddy Agnew, also on 22 points.

In section two (14-18) the winner was Gerwyn Young scoring 22 points just beating Brian Robinson one point behind on 21 points.

Section three (19-22) was won by Martin McClinton on 22 points beating closest rival Ryan Agnew on 20 points.

Section four (23-28) winner was Martin Steele with his 23 points but only after a countback with an in form Maynard Biggerstaff, also on 23 points.

There were also many closely fought competitions on the back nine in the various sections with the results as follows:

Section one (0-13) winner was Philip Sheldon playing off a handicap of one and more accustomed to winning gross prizes, but was out gunned by his playing partner Deaglan O’Hagan on this occasion and had to settle for the points prize.

Philip’s excellent score was 21 points off one, beating on countback Graham McIlroy who also had 21 points.

In section two (14-18) Peter Whiteside won with 22 points also on countback from Paddy O’Hagan also on 22 points.

Section three winner (19-22) was Derek Howell scoring 23 points from Sean Magill, one behind on 22 points.

Section four (23-28) winner was Roy Cleland once again scoring 22 pts and beating Gareth Reilly, also on 22 points, but only after yet another countback, the fifth in the section prizes alone this week and just underlining how competitive the field really was.

The Monday seniors competition, played over 14 holes, also turned out to be another extremely tight affair which was won by our Clyde Anderson who rose to the fore for victory with 29 poits.

Tom Crooks led the chasers on 28 points and came out on top after one of the most difficult countbacks for some time.

In total six players finished with 28 points. Tom came out on top followed by Aubrey Davidson, James Henning, Stuart Cameron, Jack Brown, and Tom Ellison.

The Wednesday sweep was had a runaway winner in the form of Mark Clendinning.

Mark amassed a magnificent 37pts over the 14 holes and on so-doing had his handicap cut by three shots.

Malcolm Powell shot 35pts (which would normally be a winning score) but on this occasion only good enough for second place.

Tom Chapman and David Waterworth were third and fourth.
