Great victory for the veterans

THE Lurgan 1 Veterans’ team had one of their best wins to date this season when they met Newcastle on their home green last Monday week, collecting maximum points and a win by 22 shots.

Ivor Mitchell’s inspired his rink throughout the match and Tom Connolly, Vincent Devlin with Malcolm Lynch responded well to overcome B Anderson’s Newcastle rink by 29-10.

Mitchell’s rink got off to flying start with cracking six shot on the first end, followed by three shots on the third end and single shots on the fifth and six ends to take a commanding lead of 11-2 after the sixth end.

Having dropped a double shot on seventh end Mitchell’s rink were not to be deterred and responded by helping themselves to another five shots over the next two ends to take the score to 16-4 in their favour. After the fifteenth end they had increased their lead to ten shots but the visitors had no answer to the consistent bowling by the Lurgan 1 rink who went on to win the rink by 19 shots.

Billy Martin’s rink, comprising Declan McCabrey, Bobby Livingstone and Albert Houston played well against determined opposition from J Corrigan’s Newcastle rink, eventually winning the rink by three shots.

Martin’s rink made a confident start and led 9-4 after the ninth end but was met with persistent bowling by the visitors who gained 8 shots over the next three ends to go into the lead 12-11.

The home rink regained control, taking double shots off the thirteenth and fourteenth ends, to lead by one shot at 13-12. By the fifteenth end at was all square at 13-13, but Martin’s rink kept its composure winning single shots off the remaining closely fought ends to eventually win the rink 15-13, and to ably assist Mitchell’s rink in taking the maximum ten points from the match.
