Great weekend for Dromore athletes

LAST week Dromore Athletic Club took part in the Armagh International Road Races and the Northern Ireland and Ulster Age Group Championships in Magherafelt.

They came away with gold medals, age categories wins, team wins, course records, personal bests and outstanding performances all round.

First up was the Armagh Road Races and the Dromore women got off to a superb start in the 3K race with all three runners having excellent runs against top quality opposition with Julie Turley taking a superb seventh place overall in 10 minutes 18 seconds (PB) followed home in 14th by Gillian Burns in 10.34 (PB) and first 0/35.

Geraldine Branagh was hot on her heels in 15th in 10.36 (PB), also first 045 and a course record for her age group. Their outstanding performances gave them the team prize as well.

Next up was the Mens 3K and again there were great runs from the Dromore athletes on show with Nigel McKibbin taking third 040 in 10.06 (PB) and Nigel Grier fourth O45 in 10.13.

Neil Dillon and Colm Turley, who were making their debut over the distance, both had very good runs to finish in 11.10.

Rebekah Nixon was the youngest athlete of the week where she was on show for the Dromore club at the Northern Ireland and Ulster Age Group Championships in Magherafelt and the rising star showed she will be one for the future with her all round fantastic performances on the day.

Rebekah came away with two golds and a fourth place for her excellent efforts, winning the U13 girls 600m, then showed her versatility by taking gold again, this time in the shot and completed her superb day with fourth in the 60m hurdles final.
