Hamill set to sign up

RORY Hamill appears all set to finally sign a contract at Glenavon this week.

It had been thought that the 33-year-old striker would join the club some weeks ago but the move had then been put in jeopardy with manager Marty Quinn claiming in last week’s ‘MAIL’ that the chances of a contract being signed were rated as only 50:50.

The boss has now agreed terms with the former Cliftonville man who may even pull on a Glenavon shirt for the first time this weekend, albeit in the Reserves’ match away to Coleraine; another of his former clubs.

“There was nothing sorted before the transfer deadline but I think Rory Hamill will sign before the end of the week,” said boss Quinn confidently.

“The closing of the transfer window isn’t an issue because he was a free agent anyway so he’ll hopefully be signing towards the end of the week. I agreed terms with him down the phone so it’s just a matter of getting him down to the club and signed on.

“It’s unlikely that he’ll play in the first team on Saturday but if we get him signed before 12 noon on Friday we’ll maybe give him a run out in the Reserves.

“He’ll be a good lad to have around the place. He played for me at Coleraine and he’s experienced and he’s strong so we’ll see how it goes.

“I hope he will be coming in as a regular starter in the side. He’s here until the end of the season and he’s come in to earn himself a contract for next year basically. If he stays on longer than this season it will mean he is doing well so it’s up to him.

“It’s not looking like there will be anyone else coming in as a free agent in the near future but I’m making overtures to get players in at the end of the season.”

Hamill’s signing will mean that Quinn has added three players to his panel in the January window with Hugh Davey and Barry Johnston also signing on and the boss is content at his transfer dealings for the month.

“I have to be,” he said.

“Two of the signings are vastly experienced and Hugh Davey will certainly be a talent, there’s no doubt about that. At the moment, it’s mission accomplished for the January transfer window.”
