Hard work pays off as Bann Ladies Firsts earn share of the spoils

Banbridge Ladies 1XI travelled to Cookstown 1XI on Friday night to play a league game.

Cookstown started the game strongly and immediately tested the Banbridge defence resulting in a penalty corner for Cookstown. Bann Goalkeeper, Sarah McCabe, however, produced an excellent save.

Banbridge soon settled into the game and started to show much more composure and looked strong and determined, passing the ball fluently through the defence and midfield feeding the forwards who forced the Cookstown defence to work continuously.

This resulted in several chances, including two penalty corners which unfortunately Banbridge couldn’t convert.

Banbridge continued to put pressure on Cookstown and came close to scoring from open play on a number of occasions but the ball just couldn’t find the back of the net with the Cookstown goalkeeper making some good saves.

Cookstown came back on the offensive and split open the Banbridge defence where the Cookstown forward picked it up and slipped it to her team mate who fiercely slammed it into the net leaving the Banbridge keeper without a chance.

In the second half Banbridge started off nicely with well structured moves and some great cross-pitch passing.

The defence worked tirelessly to break down the opposition to ensure that Cookstown attacks didn’t come to anything.

Excellent work from the Banbridge forwards resulted in a penalty corner being awarded. However, this proved fruitless.

Throughout the half a number of Banbridge players sustained injuries but the team continued to pile on the pressure to secure a goal.

Their hard work finally paid off after much pressure in the circle by Elayne Brown, Gail McConnell, Alex Jenkinson and Alannah Magee resulted in a well-deserved equaliser from Alex Jenkinson.

This proved to be a tough match for both teams with both putting pressure on their opposition’s defence and both keepers being kept busy throughout the match.
