Harp-y days for Steven

THREE-handicapper Steven Smyth emerged victorious at the conclusion of the 54-hole Harry Harper Memorial Cup competition at Ballymena Golf Club.

Steven added a nett 66 to his first two rounds of 67 and 68 for a three round total of three under par 201.

Smyth had the ideal start to his round as he birdied three of the first four holes and his only dropped shot on the first nine was on the par four sixth.

Having shed a shot on the 10th, 11th and 14th, he managed to par the other six holes and a round of one over gross saw him finish on three under nett overall.

Ferguson McKelvey - the clear leader after two rounds - also finished on a total of 201 but, alas, was unable to be present to play the tie holes required, therefore forfeiting a possible win or runner-up position to second-placed Michael Scroggie (7) who ended up with a total of 202.

Michael also had a superb opening nine where, although having dropped a shot on the first, he had birdies on the third, fourth and sixth to be two under gross after nine holes.

The closing nine was a complete anti-climax, however, as he had five single bogeys plus a double bogey on the par three 14th, but the worst of all was a triple bogey on the 12th which was a crippling blow in the grand scheme of things.

Third place was won by four-handicapper Gary Black with a total of 204, having had a nett 69 on the final round.

Gary was one over after nine holes and the next four were played in par but he then shed four shots over the next three holes and he completed his round with two pars.

CLUB SWEEP

A sweep was played in conjunction with the Harper Trophy and the winner was Simon Lennox (11) with a nett score of 64.

Having shed shots on the second, third, fourth and fifth, Simon played the other six holes in par.

A par on the 10th was followed by a bogey on the 11th plus a double bogey on the 12th but he then proceeded to play the last six holes in level par.

Second nett was Gordon Bell (12) who had the best of four 65 returns.

Having started with three pars, Gordon then shed five shots on the next six holes to be out in five over gross.

The second nine also commenced with three pars but the next four holes saw him drop four shots and he managed to par the last two holes for a better second nine from Michael Maybin.

Michael's front nine was made up of seven pars plus a bogey on the second and a double bogey on the fifth.

The back nine contained five pars plus a dropped shot on the 11th, 13th, 15th and 16th but was still good enough to pip five handicapper, Stephen Russell.

Stephen had dropped a shot on the second but soon retrieved that with a birdie on the fourth and went on to par the other seven holes.

His second nine was good as he had seven pars plus a dropped shot on the 12th and 17th o be two over gross and his second nine was good enough to push Paul Francey (9) into fifth place.

Paul had a superb front nine of level par but the second nine saw him shed six shots despite having had four pars.

The final nett prize was won by Desmond Leemon (17) with a score of 66 and in that nett total, he had two quadruple bogeys which was really punishing. On the good side, Des had nine pars so he should really have been much higher on the prize list.

The best gross came from Steven Smyth who actually won the overall Harry Harper.

SUNDAY OPEN

The Sunday Open Stableford saw Adrian Gough post a score of 42 points which was two points ahead of second-placed Gary Black.

Black (4) was one over gross on the front nine for 19 points but a run of eight straight pars plus a birdie on the last was worth another 21 points for a total of 40.

The best gross score came from Dermot McElroy (+2) who was two under on the way out and one under on the way home for a 65.

Dermot had 11 pars, two bogeys and five birdies on his card.
