Harriers set for Spanish challenge

SEVENTEEN Men and women of the Sperrin Harriers will take to sky’s on Friday 24th February when the will be boarding a plane for Spain to compete in the Barcelona half marathon.

The race which takes place on the Sunday morning is one of the most popular half marathon’s in Europe and draws big crowds of athletes from Ireland & the U.K. This is the 2nd year in a row that the Harriers have made the trip to the Barcelona Half Marathon and it looks like we might make this a annual trip, for the good weather,the craic, and a great race

Next Saturday the 18th February some of the Harriers will make the journey to the Roe Valley Country Park for Springwell Athletic clubs annual 5 mile trail race, there will be a new course this year due to a landslide on the usual course, This race is a popular race with Harriers over the years and we hope we will have a good squad of athletes there,

With less than 3 weeks to go to the final race in our winter League which is the 10 mile run around Lough Fea on Saturday 3rd March and there is still a lot at stake in some of the Categories, So far there is only a few categories decided

Pius McIntyre senior men, Jim Breen O/55, Irwin Speirs O/60, Karen Alexander F/O while in the mens O/50 Dominic McCarten Omagh & David O’Brien will have to battle it out in the 10 mile for the top spot with O’Brien leading by 30sec, Martin McLaughlin Omagh Harriers looks favourite to win the O/45 but Paul McLaughlin & Alan Shaw will be trying to stop him, Tanya Black should take the F/35 and Anne Paul City Of Derry the F/45,We hope to see yous all at the Lough on the 3rd March on what should be a exciting 4 laps of Lough Fea

There is only 10 weeks to go to the 2nd running of the Sperrin Harriers Magherafelt 5 mile Classic road race which again is been Sponsored by Sportique, and will take place on Saturday 14th April @ 12 noon

So that gives you 10 weeks training to get yourself into shape so why not take up the challenge and get ready for the race it’s only 5 mile and you don’t have to be a world beater all you have to be is a person that loves to run and don’t be afraid to come along to any of the training session in Magherafelt or Cookstown and ask any of the Sperrin Harrier members for some advice we are always willing to help newcomers to athletes.

Training at Loughry College Cookstown & Rainey Rugby Club Magherafelt at 6-30pm every Tue/Thur and every Wed at the Meadowbank Sports Arena at 7-30pm
