Harrison misses out on Final

EGLINTON'S Ryan Harrison narrowly missed out on a place in the 200 metres freestyle final, at the European Senior Swimming Championships in Budapest, as he finished 10th in the semi-finals, last night (Tuesday).

The City of Derry swimmer's time of 1:49.04 was only .12secs outside the top eight swimmers who made today's (Wednesday) final.

The 21-year-old had clocked 1:49.80 to take 11th in the morning heats.

"It's bitter-sweet. I went faster than I went in the heats and I'm not too disappointed," admitted Harrison.

"That semi-final was my all so I can't be unhappy with my best swim this year and the best swim of my life without the (polyurethane) suit.

"It's going to give me something to take away and get to swim faster for London 2012."

For City of Derry Swimming coach Seamus McAnee believes the experience Budapest can only help Harrison for Commonwealth Games in October.

"His target is the Commonwealth Games in India and I don't believe his swims in Budapest will have altered that.

"He's very determined and having reached the semi-final, and just missed out in the final, I think he'll be happy enough and continue to prepare for India."
