Harrison withdraws from Commonwealth Games competition

EGLINTON'S Ryan Harrison has unfortunately had to withdraw from competition at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

He was examined by team doctors Barbara Fair and Bruce Thompson and initially was advised that a recovery may be possible and his original flight out to Delhi was delayed by four days.

Following his first competition swim in the relay, Ryan's health clearly wasn't up to competition level, however he participated in the 200m Freestyle on Tuesday morning. It was obvious at this stage that Ryan needed to be rested to see if full recovery was possible.

Unfortunately after two days of resting and a further consultation with the medical staff, it was advised that the City of Derry swimmer would not take part in any further competition.

"I'm obviously devastated that my first Commonwealth Games has come to an end. It means a lot to me to represent Northern Ireland as you don't get that opportunity too often," said Harrison.

"I approached this meet with the same level of preparation as any other international competition.

"Coming into these Games I was looking good to make a final in the 200m Freestyle and clearly my body told me otherwise.

"However I'm going to take as much positivity from this as I can so I can return to the next Commonwealth Games educated in a multi-sport environment".

Robert McVeigh said: "It is unfortunate that one of Northern Ireland's best competitors has had to withdraw from competition. The team is united in wishing Ryan a speedy recovery."
