Hat-trick for Gerry

GERRY McConville won the inaugural Sweeney Cup at Ballycastle Golf Club on St. Patrick's Day to complete a memorable hat-trick following his success in the previous Saturday and Sunday competitions.

The St. Patrick’s Day weather was pleasant and over 120 golfers took part in the day’s competition with Gerry’s score of 43 points giving him a two shot advantage over George McVeigh with Shay Paul Duffin, Mel Carleton and John Sayers in third, fourth and fifth places on 40 points apiece.

Michael Dallat jnr. completed the course in level par to win the best gross prize and in the ladies competition, Mary Duffin returned a stunning score of 46 points to win and make it a very successful day for the Duffin household!

A fourball betterball competition on Saturday and the pairing of Eamon McIlroy and Robin McHugh took first place after achieving the magical score of 59, one shot clear of the pairing of Francis McGinn and Billy Rooney jnr. A handful of pairs returned scores of 61 but after the back nines were compared it was Seamus McMullan and Patrick Dixon who took the third spot with fourth place going to Philip Hewitt and Owen Kennedy.

The stableford competition played on Sunday was won by Brendan Black with a fine tally of 43 points. Michael Dallat snr. finished in second place with 41 points ahead of Gerry McGouran on the back nine with Declan McCarry taking fourth prize with a score of 40 points.

Congratulations go to Mark McPoland for his hole-in-one at the 17th on Sunday!

A two-ball scramble will be played at Ballycastle next Saturday and on Sunday there will be a stableford to raise funds for the Causeway Artscare charity.

The following weekend is Easter with an Open Mixed Foursomes on the Saturday, a stableford on the Sunday and the first qualifying competition of the season, the Glandore Cup, taking place on Easter Monday.
