Hat-trick not enough to save Rathfriland U10s

THE Swifts took on Newry side Midway 1 at the IFA Games Development Centre and put in a fine display in a tight game.

The first period of the game was a very cagey affair with the excellent defensive partnership of Danielle Megaw and Ryan Tumilty dealing well with the lively Midway attack and Johnny McGivern in goal pulling off some excellent saves.

Rathfriland almost took the lead when a strong tackle from Adam Cromie in midfield allowed him to put the speedy Jordan Magowan through on goal only to see his shot go inches wide.

The Newry team broke the deadlock just before the break with a low drive past the diving McGivern and caught the Swifts napping again to go two up at the break.

Rathfriland got the start they were looking for in the second period when, within 10 seconds of the restart, Ben Johnston released Mark Bronte who flicked the ball past the keeper to close the deficit.

The joy was however short lived as Midway returned the compliment straight from the restart to restore their advantage. With the strong wind in their backs Midway turned the screw and appeared to seal win with their fourth goal of the game.

However Scott Chambers had other ideas when he received a pass from Thomas Ingram with his back to goal, controlled it beautifully and cleverly laid the ball into Bronte’s path who doubled his tally for the day with a neat finish.

Minutes later Magowan on the right played a sharp pass to Bronte who cut inside past two defenders to finish with his left foot. The brave fight back ended when time ran out on the buoyant Swifts.
