Heverin wins in league opener

THE opening round of this year’s interclub league took place last Tuesday and saw 42 riders take the start for a five mile time trial on the Portadown to Moy road.

Clann Eireann’s star time trialist, John Heverin was a clear winner. Other Clanns cyclists near the top of the result sheet were Conor Grimes in fourth, Declan Mulhoulland fifth and Martin McConville eighth.

Heverin repeated things two evenings later, on Thursday at the East Tyrone’s race, again winning. Declan Mulhoulland was seventh, for Declan it was another great result given that he is not yet 16 years old.

The Clanns riders were in action over the past weekend in various open road races. Conor Grimes rode aggressively at Stamullen, getting in the winning break, and won a category prize. Martin McConville was best of a four man team that took on the 100 kilometre Red Hand Trophy race in Broughshane on Saturday, finishing well up in the third group.

Next week, round three of the interclub league moves to the Birches for a 10-mile time trial on Tuesday evening, with a 7pm start.
