David McCloy said Hilden, like his own club, Ards, were termed as “smaller” clubs, but how many of the “larger ones” could have attracted over 80 to their annual dinner and ran many social occasions throughout the year?

“Do not get me wrong,” he said, “Larger clubs have an important role to play, but clubs like Hilden do an important job in bringing young players into the game as well as promoting the social side.”

The President added that it was a shame when the smaller clubs brought good young players into the game - “and I am especially thinking of the Kirkwood brothers” - only to see them having to join the more successful clubs in order to make progress.

“It is essential though.”
