Hilden rink comes close

Hilen Open Rinks Tournament continued last week and one of the club’s rinks, skipped by Steven Kirkwood, reached the semi-finals.

On Monday night in the second round Muriel Wilkinson led 12-6 and 15-14, but lost 15-16 to S. McCombe.

B. Megrath was leading 12-4 at the ninth, but T. Crawford came back to win by a shot at a tie end.

On to Tuesday night and again the second round with Hilden’s Howard McMullan 17-13 down at 13 ends, but he came back to win 18-17 at a tie end.

M. Crawford beat Bobby Carroll who had two ladies in his ranks, 17-6 and Janet Bell who caused an upset for a Hilden ladies rink in the first round led Eddie Crawford 12-11 at 12 ends but lost 19-11.

Lisnagarvey’s Keith Morrison led 11-9 at 13 ends and Alan Roberts lifted a five before the Garvey rink finished with a double but lost by a shot.

Hilden’s Steven Kirkwood led 9-2 at the fifth and held the advantage throughout for a good win over Neil Mulholland, Lisnagarvey.

In the first quarter final played on Wednesday night, Eddie Crawford, Mossley beat Sam McCombes, Dungannon. Rain stopped the remaining quarter finals on Thursday though Michael Crawford,

Bangor, accepted the game against Alan Roberts, Lurgan was out of his reach and conceded to Roberts.

Hilden’s Howard McMullan had a good battle before losing to Tom Crawford, Salisbury but there was success for Hilden in the other game with Steven Kirkwood beating T. Green, Shaftesbury.

Wednesday night: quarter final, S. McCombes Dungannon lost to E. Crawford Mossley.

Thursday night: quarter final, M. Crawford Bangor conceded to A. Roberts Lurgan when rain stopped play

Friday night: quarter finals, H. McMullan Hilden lost to T. Crawford Salisbury, S. Kirkwood Hilden beat J. Green Shaftesbury.

- Dromore only managed a point from two matches played during last week and they failed to register at home to Balmoral on Saturday. They were very much understrength though and have been awaiting the inevitable relegation for some time now. James McKenny got their only win when they travelled to local rivals, Banbridge.
