Hillsborough triple unlucky in British title bid but Irish success for Haire

The Hillsborough Social triple of Andy Riley, Nathan and Nick Haire were desperately unlucky at the British Isles short mat championships, when they lost the title on shot difference.

They had beaten England in the “round robin” stages, but lost to Wales.

A count back on shots left the Hillsborough boys losing out to England, who they had beaten earlier.

Disappointed, but they had to settle for runners-up spot, but it was as close as it could have been.

There was some consolation for Nick Haire, when he was part of the Irish team, along with Raymond Stubbs, Ballinderry, which swept all the opposition aside to lift both the full international and A series titles.

There was also more satisfaction for the Haire family in this success for their father, Tom, was the Irish team manager for the first time and he did a great job.

Tom is, of course, Lisburn Zone convenor and plays for Hillsborough Social.

There was also another good performance by a Hillsborough player when Michael Beattie was runner-up in the A series triples.
