Historic captainpasses away

GLENAVON'S first ever league-winning captain Johnny Matthews passed away last week at the age of 89.

Matthews was the first captain of a side from outside Belfast to lift the league championship trophy when his Glenavon team won the competition in 1952.

The outstanding centre-half was ever-present that season and played for the club for a total of four years, making just under 150 appearances.
