Historic Cupples Cup success for Castlerock

CASTLEROCK celebrated their first ever trophy in their history with a comprehensive defeat of Lisnagelvin in the final of the Cupples Cup at Coleraine Bowling Club on Friday night.

The seasiders - who had a great run in the Irish Junior Cup earlier in the season - proved much too strong for opponents Lisngelvin, running out deserved 83-60 winners.

The only blot in Castlerock’s copybook came in the triples where they lost by two shots.

Clive Hutchinson got the ball rolling when he proved a devastating display of bowls to beat F Wilson in the singles by 21 shots to nine.

Father Jackie followed that up as he joined up with John Bustard in the pairs to defeat Lisnagelvin’s G Taggart 28-16.

However the Derry side showed some fight in the Triples as skip G Turnball chalked up an 18-16 success over Castlerock trio William Callaghan, Owen Caulfield and Victor Callaghan.

Castlerock capped a superb performance with a narrow victory in the rinks.

Hugh Caskey, Tom Wilson, William Kerr and Laim McLaughlin registered an 18-17 win over the Lisnalgevlin four, skipped by N Doherty.
