Hockey: Andy’s goal gets a point for fifths

South Antrim Fives travelled to Stormont on Saturday to play PSNI Twos and secured a very credible 1-1 draw.

The youthful South squad started the game positively against a more mature and strong PSNI team.

Their early pressure didn’t take long to pay off either as they soon gained the advantage. An instinctive Ian McElhinney shot deflected back off the keeper to Andy Farrell who volleyed the ball into the roof of the net from the edge of the circle.

This seemed to awaken the PSNI team who started passing the ball and attacking with vigour, however, the South back four were resolute in their defending.

The second half continued with the PSNI dominating possession and they soon equalised after the PSNI forwards were quicker to respond to a save by the South keeper, picking up the rebound, and slotting the ball into the back of the net.

With both sides wanting to secure three points, the match opened up and with some thrilling end to end play, either team could have gone on to win but no-one was able to capitalise on their approach play and the game finished up 1-1.
