Hockey: Penalty shoot-out heartache for Frazer’s Ireland

Frazer, who helped guide Ireland to previously victories over the USA and South Africa, knew a win today would have sealed a place in the last four of the World Hockey League.

However despite a highly dominant performance, they drew 1-1 before losing 4-3 on penalties, but all is not lost, however.

While only the top three are officially ensured of qualification for Rio, the fourth, fifth and sixth placed teams could yet still earn a place at the Games depending on results from other continental tournaments.

Frazer thought she had won the game against China, but her late strike was disallowed.

The game went all the way to sudden death penalties where Frazer missed, striking the post. However China’s next penalty was also missed.

But when team mate O’Flannagan then missed, China were presented with another opportunity to make the semi-finals and they took it, leaving the Irish skipper and her team mates with an uncertain wait.
