HOCKEY REVIEW: Carrick Ladies hit for six by champions Mossley

While losing again to this season’s runaway Senior 2 champions, Carrick could at least take some encouragement from having achieved their objectives of reducing the margin by which they had lost their previous league encounter and finally registering a goal against their tough opponents.

Looking for some semblance of revenge for a 9-0 hammering on their own ground back in December, Carrick started the match brightly and for at least the first half of the opening period, looked like they could give their opponents a much tighter contest than previously.

But as the number of penalty corners awarded to Mossley began to mount steadily, so too did the score line.

The beleaguered Carrick defence had to endure one of those frustrating nights when nothing seemed to go their way in their circle and the second half of the match brought them absolutely no respite.

The visitors at least managed one small moment of uplift when their bright young reserve striker Jeni Leigh Patterson breached the Mossley defensive line while her fellow striker Natasha McWilliams also put in a fighting performance leading the Carrick attack.

But with no fewer than five goals now conceded from Mossley’s penalty corner barrage, their was little to cheer the embattled Carrick squad.

A final score line of 6-1 reflected some small measure of improvement since December but Carrick were never realistically going to get anything from this match against the thoroughly deserving league champions.
