Humphrey claims the salver-ware at Raceview

THE O'Hagan Salver, a competition for member with a handicap of 13+, was up for grabs at Ballymena Golf Club and it was won by William Humphrey with a gross score of 76.

The 13-handicapper made it a double as he also won the sweep which was run in conjunction with the O’Hagan event.

Humphrey opened his account with three pars plus a birdie on their third and although he had three more pars, he suffered a setback on the fifth and eighth, where he had double bogeys.

Going into the back nine three over, he then shed four shots over the next five holes and he completed his round with three pars plus another dropped shot on the last hole.

That shot could have been costly but he still managed to edge past Paul Stevenson (7) in the sweep.

Paul was through the front nine in level par and a back nine of three pars, four dropped shots and birdies at 13 and 18.

John Rainey (11) took the third nett prize with a 64 and on a better second nine score from Ian Lecky and David Crockard.

Rainey was through the first nine in five over gross and that included a double bogey on the par five third.

Three dropped shots on the first three holes of the second nine were then followed by five pars plus a birdie three on the 18th, which was most rewarding as it pushed Lecky into fourth place.

Ian was five over after nine holes and again that included a double bogey on the par four fifth, while the second nine was made up of five pars plus bogeys on the 12th, 15th, 16th and 17th for a better last hole from Crockard.

David was five over on the front nine and his back nine was equal to Lecky only for the fact that his last hole score was a five against Lecky’s four.

The final nett score was a 65, returned by Mark SImpson (10) having played the front nine in four over and the back nine in three over - those three shots going at 11, 12, 14 and 16, of which he managed to retrieve only one, with a birdie on the short par four 13th.

The best gross card came from three-handicapper Steven Smyth with a gross total of 69 shots. Steven’s opening nine contained six pars, a dropped shot on the fifth and sixth, plus a birdie on the third.

He was back to level par having had a birdie on the 10th, only to drop a shot on the 12th and 14th, but he finished his round with four pars plus another birdie on the treacherous 17th, for a level par inward trip.

TURKISH RIVIERA CHARITY

The Sunday open stableford was in aid of the Turkish Riviera charity and the scoring was top-rate for a deserving cause.

The top score was 43 points from Stephen Black (14) who had 21 on the outward nine, to which he added another 22 on the inward nine.

His card contained 10 pars, six single bogeys, a double bogey on the 15th plus a birdie on the final hole.

Runner-up was Adrian Hamill with 42 points, of which 24 came from the second nine.

Fifteen-handicapper Hamill must have felt pretty good with such a fine total and with that two over gross second nine in his favour, but as does happen, better can sometimes come along.

WEDNESDAY OPEN

The Wednesday open was won by Ferguson McKelvey who, having missed out on the Harry Harper Memorial the previous Saturday, made no mistake on this occasion as he accumulated 38 points.

Having had his handicap slashed recently after a period of great form, Ferguson still returns top scores and on this occasion he had 20 points on the front nine, despite bogeying the two par fives.

The back nine contained four fours, four fives plus a par three on the 10th for an additional 18 points, which was one point ahead of second-placed Dylan Cole (19).

An outward nine of six over gross yielded 21 points and he managed to add another 16 points on the inward nine for a total of 37 stableford points.
