Humphrey wins memorial event from large field at Raceview

A FIELD of 180 members set off in the Neil Wray Memorial competition at Ballymena Golf Club on July 3 and good scores were the order of the day.

The top spot was taken by William Humphrey who, off a handicap of 13, posted a nett score of seven under par 61.

Having commenced his round with a trio of dropped shots, William was possibly not thinking of a winning score as he managed to drop another shot on the sixth, eighth and ninth, but a birdie on the fifth saw him five over after nine.

The second nine was in complete contrast as the only shots dropped were on the 12th and 14th but the main score came on the final hole where he had a birdie three.

This was most vital as he pipped Brian Logan (17) by a shot and he will have all the wrong memories of the last hole as he had a double bogey.

This was not his only double bogey as he had others on the seventh, ninth and 12th plus that one at 18 - again, a case of what might have been.

Brian registered seven pars plus birdies on the 13th and 16th but those double bogeys proved penalising.

Category one was won by eight-handicapper Gerard Rafferty who had a nett total of 65, having double-bogeyed the opening hole plus the 12th. Against that he had nine pars plus birdies on the ninth, 10th and 13th and he concluded his round with a one over gross second nine.

An in-form Ferguson McKelvey (12) won category two with a nett 63.

Having won the open stableford the previous Wednesday, Ferguson continued his good run and despite having lost a shot on his handicap, he was a clear winner.

Despite dropping a shot on the opening two holes, he played the front nine in four over, which put him in a strong position entering the back nine.

The first seven holes resulted in six pars plus a bogey on the 12th but alas, a double bogey on the penultimate hole somewhat spoiled a cracking round as he parred the last hole for a nett 63.

Category three saw Ernie Nixon (15) top the returns with a nett score of 64 having had a front nine of six over to which he added a five over back nine.

The last two holes on each nine were responsible for five of those dropped shots when he had a bogey on the eighth, ninth and 17th but a double bogey on the final hole was costly.

Against these he managed to have a birdie on the seventh and 11th which helped matters somewhat.

The final category saw Sammy Carleton (20) return a nett score of 62 which has cost him two shots off his handicap.

An outward score of four pars plus five single bogeys gave him the desired start and another three pars came on the inward nine, only to be spoiled by double bogeys on the 11th, 14th and 17th, but all in all he had a good round.

The best gross score was posted by another of the youthful squad at the club, namely Jordan Lemon, who, off a six handicap, played the course in level par with equal nines of 34.

A cracking start to his round saw him birdie the first and third but he shed a shot on the second and then followed that up with five pars for a one under front nine.

Into the back nine with a par he then dropped a shot on the 11th plus two shots on the 12th.

This was soon rectified as he birdied the 13th, 14th and 16th only to go back to one over, having dropped a shot on the final hole.

This will no doubt see his handicap alter when he tees off in his next round.

WEDNESDAY OPEN

The Wednesday open stableford resulted in a win for Ferguson McKelvey, with the 13-handicapper returning 41 points.

Three over after four holes, he followed that with four pars, only to drop another shot on the ninth but he had accumulated 20 points.

The back nine was made up of five pars plus a dropped shot on the 12th, 13th, 15th and 18th for an additional 21 points.

Second nett was won by club captain John Brown (11) who scored 40 points.

A special round looked to be on as John parred the first six holes but followed that with a bogey, par, bogey for 21 points.

The second nine was spoiled with a double bogey on the 15th and 16th but a birdie on the 14th helped him score another 19 points.

Junior member Richard Mark (6) returned the best gross score of 70, having been out in two under which included a birdie at the second and ninth plus an eagle three on the third.

The inward nine saw him drop four shots on the last three holes with the other six being level par.

LADIES

Yvonne Fullerton won the Broughshane Rosewbowl at Ballymena Golf Club last week with a nett score of 68.

She finished one shot ahead of runner-up, Jill Black, who shot a 69.
