Ian shoots a sumptuous six under 64

The scratch golfer shot six under par, to claim the gross prize in the Summer Medal.

Ian started his round with two birdies on the first two holes and followed it up with birdies at the sixth and seventh to complete the front nine in 31 blows.

He started the back nine in similar fashion to the front nine with birdies at 10th and 11th. However, a dropped shot at the 16th was soon recovered with a birdie at the 17th to complete the back in 33 shots and magnificent 64. Ian’s round included one two, eight threes, seven fours, two fives.

Section One produced some excellent scores with three players returning nett 64s. Michael McLaverty (8) claimed topped top spot thanks to an excellent 72. Michael’s round included birdies at the first and 16th to offset the dropped shots at the fifth, ninth and 15th.

Second place went to Tony Scullion (7) who was a model of consistency going out in 35 shots. He dropped a shot at the sixth but picked up a birdie two at the next. On the back nine, Tony dropped a shot at the 14th to finish his round on one over par 71.

Ulster Cup player John McManus (10) started his round in style with a birdie at the first, but a double bogey saw him finish the front nine in 36 shots. John was well on his way to victory with birdies at the 10th and 12th but seven dropped shots over the 14th, 15th and 18th let victory slip.

Section Two was also tight with three players returning nett 68s with Brian McLarnon (15) edging out James Harrup (13) into second and Harry Grey (18) third.

Brian looked a long way off winning this section after going round the front nine in 45, however a superb three over 38 clinched him victory.

James was well placed to win the section after going round the front nine in 42 and picked up a birdie at the 11th. A double bogey five at the short 12th was followed by five pars but a disastrous seven at the last cost him dearly.

Harry Grey will also regret a double bogey at the 10th and a triple bogey at the final hole as he had to settle for third.

Section Three (19-28) was won by the in-form Rowan Shah (19) following up his win two week ago with a nett 67, he went round the front nine in 45 and clinched victory thanks to a back nine of 41.

Second went to Gerry Morrison (26) with a nett 68. The highlight of his round was a birdie two at the seventh to edge out Ken Kirkpatrick (20) who regretted a costly seven at the last.

TEAM NEWS

On Sunday, despite persistent rai,n the Holt Shield and Belfast and District sides took on Hilton and Knock.

The Holt Shield side won 4-1 and now need three matches in the return leg to qualify.

The Belfast and District side trailing 4-3 from the first leg turned the match around thanks to victories from Stephen Crowe, Chris Morgan, Ian Moore, Glenn McAuley and Darren Crowe, who was three up with three to go to gain an overall 7.5-6.5 victory. Dunmurry head to Lisburn next Sunday morning to take on Knock in the Irish Senior Cup with the winner taking on either Shandon Park or Lisburn in the afternoon for a place in the Ulster semi-finals.
