IIBA County event 'shelved' due to lack of interest

IRISH Indoor Bowling Association's Seamus Kyne admitted he was disappointed at the lack of interest for the County Championship, which was scheduled for the Provincial Towns Club, Ballymoney, last weekend.

A number of zones pulled out of the event, including Armagh, West Down, Louth, Down and Monaghan, leaving Kyne will little option but to shelve the competition -- for this season at least.

“The matter will be discussed at this week’s IIBA executive meeting,” stressed Kyne.

“It’s very disappointing because the format appeared to work over recent years. We even tried to let the bigger zones be represented by two teams.

“I would certainly like to see the tournament survive, perhaps it requires a little tinkering to put it right.

“But it’s a bit discouraging when established zones like Armagh and West Down pull out.”

IIBA PRO, Harold Massey, insists the competition perhaps requires a little make-over.

“The county championship is a good idea - but I think it needs to be upgraded to make it appealing to everyone.

“Obviously, it’s down to the IIBA to change the format. There are number of options that can be discussed. I would certainly like to see the competition back on the calendar next season.”
