IMPRESSIVE Eimear SECURES EURO SILVER

LOCAL triathlete Eimear Mullan has enhanced her glowing reputation further with a second place finish at the recent ETU Challenge Barcelona Middle Distance Championships.

The Portstewart woman produced a solid performance to finish ahead of Maria Czesnik and just behind Camilla Pedersen.

Eimear was delighted to pick up the silver medal but speaking afterwards she said it’s just another stepping stone for her.

“It is a great achievement to have gained a silver medal at a European Championship and I’m really pleased with the result but this really feels like its just another stepping stone for the future,” she said.

“The race was a solid enough performance from me. The swim was just okay, we were all over the place in the choppy water which I am sure cost us a little time. The bike suited me so I got to work on making up some time on the hilly course and started catching some of the faster swimmers around 40k. The run was just a case of getting thought it the best I could, I didn’t feel like I was flowing well but I managed to keep pushing on to make up some time and to keep far enough away from Maria Czesnik who was chasing hard just behind me.”

This was the latest great result from Mullan following her change in set-up after joining up with the Team TBB squad in Lanzarote.

“I am now training full time instead of fitting training in around work and other commitments,” explained Eimear.

“Being based at SandsBeach in Lanzarote and training with Bella (Bayliss) has allowed me to train more consistently than I have ever done before. It was a huge decision to make to go full time as I am a self funded athlete and financially it is a struggle as there is very little money coming in and a lot of outgoings. Hopefully it will pay off in the end.”
