Impressive home performance

Bann Fourths 46

Rainey Thirds 0

BANN Fourths produced an impressive performance at home to see off the challenge from Rainey Old Boys.

The Bann side was at full strength with some players available for the first time this season and it showed. From the kick-off the forwards were on the offensive and Rainey conceded a penalty which Craig Mulholland slotted over for the first points of the match.

The first try came moments later with good work from the pack setting up the backs. Chris Berry scored after eluding a couple of tackles. Mulholland knocked over the easy conversion from under the posts.

Bann’s second try was the result of great interlinking between forwards and backs. Barney McKevitt made a break through the middle before finding Ally Lewis who set up Andy Brown for a clear run in to score. Mulholland again converted.

Two more tries were added in the first half with both wingers John Porter and Peter Irvine touching down in the corners.

In the second half Bann scored three times. Stephen Jackson barged over after Irvine had been held up just short. Brown offloaded from a tackle to allow Kris Coleman to run in unopposed.

But the try of the match was the last play of the game – from open play, a Bann counter attack showed very slick fingertip passing to release Irvine in space. He raced down the line before cutting in to beat his opposite number.

Overall this was an excellent performance from the Fourths and hopefully gives them something to build on for the season ahead.
