Injury hinders Gurney

WATERSIDE darts player Daryl Gurney confirmed an elbow injury ended any hopes of reaching the quarter-final stages of the BDO World Darts championship last week.

The 22-year-old for the second year in a row lost to eventual winner Martin 'Wolfie' Adams, and anyone who watched last Wednesday night's 4-1 defeat, knew something wasn't right with Gurney.

"To be honest I have had a problem with my elbow for a few years now and it flared up again last Tuesday morning, the day before my match with Martin; I took some pain killers but it didn't work," he said.

"I threw very well against Scott Mitchell on the Monday evening and my average was the third highest in the tournament so I was happy with my form. I went to my bed early after that match and then got up on the Tuesday with my elbow really sore, I knew right away that my chances of beating Martin were virtually all over.

"As I have said I have had the problem for a while so I knew it normally takes a few weeks to clear up, but that's with me not even practicing, but I had a match to play in two days."

Now that Gurney is back at home he's adamant a return to Frimley Green next year is on the cards, but a trip to the doctor is the first port of call.

"There's definitely something wrong with my elbow, I have tried everything to try and fix the problem, so I'm going to the doctor and hopefully try and find out once and for all what the problem is," he added.

"After that I'll be back on the dart board practising and then hopefully playing in ranking tournaments, so that I can get enough points to get back to the Lakeside."
