Injury rules out Pienaar

INJURY is to prevent South African all-rounder Obus Pienaar from returning to Waringstown for a second season.

Pienaar, who enjoyed a brilliant debut season at The Lawn in 2011, informed the club at the start of the week that he will be unable to fulfil his commitments for the coming summer.

A back problem ruled Pienaar out of the Knights’ most recent franchise game and further tests have concluded that the condition will require treatment and rest over the South African winter.

Pienaar said, “I was really looking forward to linking up with my Waringstown team-mates later this year, but unfortunately this is now not going to be possible. I will keep in touch with Waringstown and wish Kyle McCallan and the guys every success in the 2012 season.”

Waringstown skipper McCallan said the club understood that Pienaar’s long-term fitness had to come before his Waringstown commitments.

“Of course we are desperately disappointed that Obus will be unable to come back for a second season at The Lawn. His performances last season were among the best we have ever seen in club cricket in the NCU, and I’m sure he would have had just as big an impact in 2012. However, Obus has to look after the rest of his career. We will now start the search for an overseas professional for the 2012 season.”
