Inst defeat Omagh Academy

AFTER their victory in Carrickfergus last week Coleraine Inst played host to Omagh Academy on Saturday.

The conditions in Coleraine were awful and they had a profound effect on the way the match would be played.

The first 15 minutes of the game were very scrappy. Omagh had most of the possession but failed to convert this into points. After a missed penalty from the Omagh outhalf Inst rallied and began to come into the game.

The hosts then found themselves with more and more possession and began to dominate all areas of the game. In the 21st minute some excellent line-out work by Christy McLaughlin and Peter Liken led to an excellent solo effort from the impressive Inst right winger David McIntyre as he beat four Omagh defenders on his way to the line.

In the second half the conditions were much the same and it was littered with handling errors from both sides. The home forwards dominated the second half steeling a number of Omagh lineouts and not allowing them into critical positions.

After a great steal at the lineout by Christie McLaughlin, Coleraine were in a good field position. Alan Clarke, who had a good game from scrum half, passed the ball to outhalf Michael Poskitt who chipped the ball over the Omagh blitz defence with the outside of his boot and out paced and out muscled two defenders to get the touch down. He added the conversion to increase the lead to 12-0.

After the try Omagh Academy applied pressure but remained scoreless due to excellent defence by the whole Inst team particularly the centres and back-row Peter Murphy, Stewart McCaffery, Conor Simpson, Joe Livingstone and Peter Liken.

In the last five minutes Omagh made a number of breaks that were dealt with by Josh Murdock and Simon Cargin. Fabulous defence on their line, in particular from Kyle Markey, Bob McCullough and Joe Livingstone, ensured that Inst still haven’t conceded a try in 140 minutes of rugby.
