Ireland do well in warm-up games

IRELAND under 19s have made an impressive start to their World Cup campaign with good displays in two warm-up games.

Waringstown all rounder Lee Nelson featured in both of the matches.

The first game was against Afghanistan with Nelson bowling a tidy spell of ten overs for 35 runs and no wickets.

Afghanistan made 221 for eight in their 50 overs with Ireland winning by three wickets as they reached 222.

Star batsman was captain Andrew Balbirnie who made 108 not out while Nelson made 16 when he opened the batting.

Their next match was against West Indies and they lost by just four runs.

Nelson took one for 46 in six overs as the West Indies reached 187 for nine in a match reduced to 42 overs a side.

Nelson was out for just eight runs but a brilliant 83 by James Shannon brought Ireland close to victory before they were all out for 183.

The tournament begins in earnest tomorrow (Friday) when Ireland face the difficult task of taking on a strong South African side.

On Sunday they meet Australia and next Tuesday they complete their group B games against USA.
