Irish call-up for Michael

LISBURN teenager Michael Stewart's hard work and determination have paid off after the local teen was recently selected by the Ireland squad to take part in the World Men's Junior Championships in Ecuador this summer.

The 18-year-old Friends' pupil, who is the current Ulster Junior Open Champion, was delighted to receive the call-up from his country, however, he now faces the task of raising 4,000 Euros to fund the trip.

Michael, who trains at Lisburn Racquets Club, began playing squash two years ago after he made the move from badminton.

However, despite having received 1,000 Euros from Irish Squash, and having applied to Lisburn City Council, various Governing Bodies and the Mary Peters Trust for funding, Michael will still need to raise a vast amount of money before he can join the squad to travel to Ecuador on July 22 for the tournament which begins on July 27.

Speaking about the Championships, Michael, whose rackets and bags are sponsored by Tecnifibre, said: "I'm excited, it will be a good experience getting over there. However, it costs a lot of money and even with the funding and sponsorships there is still quite a bit needed."

Michael, who is currently taking his A Levels said that he hopes to continue with his sport. He stated: "I will definitely pursue it. I train every day so it is a lot of hard work and dedication. I'm delighted to have been called up."

Michael's mum Janet spoke of her pride that her son has been selected to represent Ireland.
