Irish title double-header on agenda at Raceway meeting

Two Irish Championship deciders top the bill when short circuit motorsport resumes at Ballymena Raceway this Friday evening.

Both the Group Two Lightning Rod and Junior Rod Irish Champions will be crowned at Raceway on Friday evening during a packed programme of events that also includes the Wash’N’Dash SuperCup for the F2 Stock Cars, races for the increasingly competitive Stock Rod class and a special reunion event featuring former Raceway competitors.

A fierce battle is in prospect for the coveted Irish GP2 crown, where Freddie Fleck from Broughshane defends his title.

Irish Open Champion Jason Clyde, Johny Gillespie, Nigel Doherty and Andy McLeister will all harbour ambitions of taking the title.

Other contenders include Stewart Nicholl, Kenny Carson, Daniel Rodgers and Rodney Stewart from Cullybackey.

The Group Two racers will also contest the King of the North Trophy later in the evening.

The Junior Rods race for their Irish Championship at the Showgrounds on Friday too. 2014 winner Aaron Moody has reached the upper age limit for the junior class and will not be able to defend his crown so a new name will definitely be added to the trophy.

Antony Kincaid, Jack Kennedy and Jack Patchett will start as favourites and it would be extremely difficult to separate this trio as they have been very evenly matched all season.

Shea Duff and Joshua McKinstry have also qualified well along with Ballymena lad Cole McFall who has made a very good impression during his debut season.

Joel McPeake from Ballymena won the final last time out at Raceway and will be hoping for more silverware this weekend, with Jack Kearney, Matthew Drysdale, Matthew Milliken, Leah Hughes and Larne lad Samuel Wilson some of the other contenders in the line-up.

The all action F2 Stock Car division race for the Wash’N’Dash SuperCup where star names such as Christopher Kincaid, Craig McConnell and World No. 2 Graham Fegan are expected to be in the thick of the action.

The ever improving Stock Rod division completes the line-up of classes on display and former Junior Rod star Aaron Moody from Ballymena is tipped to make a return to Raceway this weekend in the Stock Rod ranks.

His progress is sure to be keenly monitored as the seventeen year old goes up against the likes of British Champion Steven McKane and Supreme Champion Wilfie McNiece.

Adam Sloan from Kells has been in great form recently and is another to watch out for, along with Stephen Doherty, Matthew McKinstry and Lester McCloy.

It is also hoped to stage a race for some former Raceway favourites during the course of the meeting on what promises to be a great night of stadium motorsport, with the first race commencing in the Ballymena Showgrounds at 7:15pm.
