In the end almost 30% of the field of 153 failed to register a score in the stroke play July Medal.

Robin Whyte chalked up his second victory in four weeks with nett 66 off 15.

His birdies at 8 and 12 greatly helped his cause and a very steady back 9 saw him claim the Medal over that stretch.

The lead had been held for most of the day by David Moore, 12, who had been one of the early morning players struggling with the rain, but he was edged into second place on the back 9.

Having holed long putts on a number of occasions during his round, he inexplicably missed a ‘one footer’ on the last prompting one member of his fourball to remark that ‘he had folded like a deck-chair’, possibly a reference to a forthcoming summer holiday.

Five players had nett 67s with Colin Robb, 13, and Marcel Shanks, 7, taking third and fourth places respectively.

Each player could point to a triple bogey for spoiling their chance of victory.

Dairmuid Mitchell, 11, was the third player to return a nett 67 and his back 9 was strong enough to claim the low section and leave two others on a similar total empty handed. That unlucky pair were Kevin Leathem, 7, and Mark Headley, 6, each of whom had four birdies but one too many double bogeys.

George Forker, 14, and Ian Montgomery, 18, each had a nett 69 with the middle section going to George on the back 9. The high section went to Jim McCann, 20, with a nett 71, beating Ronnie Bruce, 27, on the homeward stretch.

Shane Magee went round in 72 shots to take the gross with birdies at 6, 10 and 18.

This week’s Wednesday Sweep went to the seemingly ageless Timmy Cummins after he shot the umpteenth sub par round of his golfing life for 42 points off 5. His birdies at 9, 12 and 17 were the highlights of his round of 69 shots which once more underlined his very long standing position among the club’s best golfers.

Second place went to Malachy Wylie with 41 points off 3. Four birdies and four bogeys had left him level par after on the last tee and a brilliant closing eagle enabled him to leapfrog a host of aspiring fellow competitors into the runners up spot.

Young Peter Kennedy continued with his admirable season by taking third place with 40 points off 6. This score reduced his handicap to 5.2 and marked his return to category 1 status where he joins an ever increasing number of number of young players in the club in that exalted bracket.

Fourth place went to Jim McCann Jnr with 39 points off 10. His birdie at 17 was just the late boost this Wednesday specialist required as it helped him to a decisive 22 homeward points.

Kenny Hanna reached the turn with 19 points in the bag despite NRs at 4 and 7. His 39 points, off 13, saw him take fifth place with 20 points on the back 9.

The gross went yet again to Michael McSherry with 38 gross points after a two under par round of 68. Birdies at 10, 14 and 15 were followed by a bogey at 16 for his second sub par on successive Wednesdays.
