It's the double

HAZELBANK FC capped a tremendous season as they completed a League and Cup double at Coleraine Showgrounds last Friday night.

Garth Hutchinson's side edged out Bertha's FC in a thrilling final which was a credit to both teams. And at Saturday's annual presentation in the Sperrin Club Hazelbank picked up more silverware as striker Colin McClarty picked up the league Player of the Year award and Steven Crawford was named Goalkeeper of the Year to put the icing on a tremendous season for the Coleraine side.

On Friday night Bertha's went in to the game hoping to erase the painful memories of their penalty shoot-out defeat to Taverner's in the Shield final last month.

And Chris Patterson's side made the perfect start as Colin Rainey headed home Darren McGarvey's long throw with only five minutes gone.

Hazelbank gradually forced their way back into the game in the sweltering conditions and they drew themselves level midway through the half.

Steven Crawford's long clearance was flicked on by McClarty to send James Diver clear and his low cross was superbly dispatched by Nigel Sheppard.

Into the second half and again it was Bertha's who went back in front again as Marty McCrory failed to cut out a corner and Andy Cochrane smashed the ball home from six yards.

But their lead was chalked out soon after as a good move down the left sent Sheppard clear and he crossed for McClarty to fire home.

It was end to end stuff now and again Bertha's edged in front as Davy Graham coolly finished off a great counter attack.

But again Hazelbank hit back as substitute Jason King slotted home from close range from Wilson's cross.

With time running out Bertha's were awarded a free kick on the right and skipper Barry Greene nipped in front of his marker to head home Watton's centre and seemingly give Chris Patterson's side the win.

Remarkably though Hazelbank showed why they are champions as they dug deep again to take the game into extra time. It was a another sub who did the damage as Dave McClean fired home after great work by McClarty.

So it was in to extra time and with both sides starting to feel the effects of a long season the pace was slow to say the least.

But with three minutes left Garth Hutchinson's side broke Bertha's hearts and it was that man King again.

Keeper Crawford's long clearance was flicked on by McClean to McClarty, whose clever pass sent King clear on goal. And he showed great composure to slot past the advancing keeper.

Bertha's were visibly shaken but to their credit they threw everything at Hazelbank in the dying minutes. The came close from David Patterson's header, but Crawford pulled off a great one-handed save to deny the defender.
