James follows in family footsteps and John’s in form

There were Billy, Eric, Kenny and then along came Bert, followed by Cecil.

Now there is another very promising player from the Wilson clan lighting up the fairways by the name of James.

James, playing off a handicap of 23, won the Teddy Reade Cup last Saturday with a score of 45 points. He had seven lovely pars and a delightful birdie at the sixth. He could even afford to ding holes 11 and 17 and still win by two points.

Paul McCullough’s return to top-flight golf continues unabated. Playing off 12, he finished runner-up in the Teddy Reade Cup with 43 points. Paul shot a 74 gross which included a marvellous run of nine pars in a row from the seventh.

Seamus Rooney (8) won the low section (0-12) with 40 points and Shane Rooney (8) was runner-up with 39 points. They battled toe-to-toe for 17 holes and they were level on the 18th tee. It took a brilliant birdie two from Seamus to settle the issue.

Richard Coburn (16) finished with six straight pars to win the middle section (13-17) with 42 points. The great Tommy Gillespie (13) was runner-up with 41 points.

Mark Hodgen (25), whose days in the high section (18+) must surely be numbered, won this time with 42 points. He relegated Cathal McAnarney (19) into second place on countback.

Colin Wilton (2) won the best gross prize with a one under par 68. There have been three gross prizes so far and Colin has won two of them.

And what a surprise winner we had in the senior section. Dominic Quinn (23) won with 40 points. Why the surprise? Well, no one thought Dominic was the age to play in the senior section. Doesn’t time fly?

SUNDAY 30TH MARCH

What more can we say about that wonderful golfer, John Poots?

John has won the Sunday Sweep four times this year and we are only at the end of March. If he can maintain this form for the rest of the year, John could set a record total of wins that might never be equalled.

1st- John Poots (18) Nett 31.

2nd- Robert Haire (19) Nett 31.5.

3rd- Eamon McAnarney (12) Nett 32.

MONDAY 31 MARCH

Would you believe it, John Poots has won again. Not content with winning, John took away half of the twos pot. Dermot Magee took the other half. This is John’s sixth sweep win this year.

1st- John Poots (18) 35 points.

2nd- Cecil Wilson (16) 35 points.

3rd- Peter Hillen (11) 32 points.

THURSDAY 3 MARCH

There was a smaller field than usual for this 14 holes sweep because the PIGS were off on an outing to Greenore. Philip Mallon seized his chance to record his first win of the season. It surely won’t be his last.
