Jenny and Doreen steal the show at Alpha Finals Day

The matches may have featured World and European Para Badminton champion Niall McVeigh, Irish National Singles champion Tony Stephenson, and Sinead and Ciaran Chambers who were members of the Irish squad which gained promotion in the European Mixed Championships, but Jenny Stephenson and Doreen McClements took the headlines with their win.

Facing Summer Ferguson and Aine McClure, who had battled it out in the Intermediate Girls Singles final earlier with Aine coming through 21-16 16-21 23-22, Jenny and Doreen took the opening set 21-17.

The overall outcome was never in doubt as the experienced partnership sealed the second 21-16 though it has to be stated that Aine was coming to the end of her eighth match of the day while for Summer it was her fourth final.

Aine understandably ran out of steam through sheer exhaustion (who could blame her?).

She did extremely well to come out with winning the girls singles in the Intermediate Club beating Summer Ferguson 21-16 15-21 23-22 and partnered Phoebe Larmour to a 21-12 21-19 victory over Hannah and Summer Brennan. In the Minor Club ladies singles, she recorded another energy sapping three-set victory, this time over Lizanne Kennedy 21-14 17-21 21-17.

She was also to come ever so close to gaining revenge for that earlier defeat at the hands of Jenny Stephenson when partnering Davy Rice in the final of the Senior Mixed Doubles.

Despite losing the opening set quite tamely 21-11 to Jenny and her partner Colin Watterson, they battled back and would have considered themselves unfortunate not to have taken the match to a decider, going down 21-19.

Rachael Woods, who was completing her preparations for the Irish squad competing in the Quadrangular Series this week, had to fend off her sister Rebecca in two singles finals, the Under 16 Girls Singles and the Senior Ladies Singles, although she was pressed all the way in both finals by her twin, who was also named in the Irish squad.

The pair teamed up to lift the Under 16 Girls Doubles crown, beating Aine McClure and Summer Ferguson 21-10 21-7 while Rebecca also captured the mixed title when partnering Matthew Robb they recorded a 21-12 21-16 win over Jack Armstrong and sister Rachael.

Not to be outdone by her big sisters, eight year old Paige Woods won her girls singles title beating Anna Monteith 21-7 21-12 but had to be content with the runner-up spot in the doubles when Zara Bell and Anna Monteith came through to lift the crown beating Paige and Kate Callaghan 21-19 21-12.
