Jim shoots his best score yet

On a cracking Summer day and with good weather for all the competition the scores were again of high standard at Silverwood.

In first place and with a cracking nett 62 was Jim Doran. Jim got his round of to solid start with pars at holes 1 and 2.

On 3rd hole a misplaced iron would see Jim record a bogey 5 for this hard index hole. Another par would be added on the easiest hole on the course before a double bogey 6 would set Jim back a bit.

A run of pars at 6 ,7 ,8 and 9 would see Jim 4 under his handicap on front nine and an equally solid start on back nine would see Jim pull further away from field.

Pars at 10,11,12,13 and 14 would see Jim well in command. A bogey at 15 would be bettered with a par at 16 before a further bogey at 17 quickly followed by par at closing hole would see Jim shoot his best score of the season. Jim shot a gross 76 which resulted in his fine nett 62.

In second place and 4 shots behind the leader was Paul Toman. Paul started his round solidly as well with opening pars at 1 and 2.

On the 3rd hole a misplaced drive would see Paul record a bogey 5. On the 4th hole a good shot from the tee would see Paul in great position to record another par.

A cracking drive followed by a good iron would see Paul hole the putt for a cracking birdie. A

loose shot on the 6th hole would result in bogey 4.

On the 7th hole a par would be recorded before another loose tee shot would see Paul record a double bogey 6 on the 8th hole quickly followed by a nice par on the 9th.

On back nine Paul recorded another double bogey at 10 then a par at 11 would be followed by a nice birdie 2 at the 12th.

Paul would then record pars at 13, 14 and 15 before a bogey 6 at the 16th. Pars at 17 and 18 would see Paul finish as strongly as he had started and keep his second place with nett 66.

In third place was Hugo Funes with a nett 66 only losing out on count back to Paul. Hugo started his round really well recording a par at the opening hole followed by a bogey which he got back with fine birdie at the 3rd hole.

A wayward tee shot cost Hugo a double bogey 6 on what is deemed to be easiest hole on course, the 4th. Bogeys at 5 ,7 and 9 would be equalled with pars at 6 and 8 for a nice

opening 9 holes for Hugo.

On the back nine Hugo had par at 10 then bogeys at 11 and 12 before a double bogey at 13 would then be followed by a triple bogey 7 at 14 which probably cost Hugo at least one place. Bogeys at remaining four holes would see Hugo shoot a nice nett 66 and finish a solid 3rd.

In fourth place and with a nice nett 67 was George Sewell. George started his round with a bogey at the opening three holes before getting into his stride.

The big fella then got going and had a smashing run of pars at the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th holes for a nice opening front nine.

On back nine a misplaced tee shot would result in bogey at 10, a par at 11 would be followed by

a bogey at 12, all from George hitting trees from 12th tee shot. On 13 a big drive meant less iron onto green which resulted in nice par.

Bogeys at 14 and 15 would have George pegged back a little before the highlight of the big man’s round an eagle 3 at 16th.

George showed his athletic side with a cracking drive of 280 + yards from the tee followed be a cracking iron onto the green for a nice shortish putt for a well deserved eagle. A little bit more concentration at 17 instead of waving to the galleries would have seen his double bogey 6 bettered on 17.

On the closing hole the heroics of the previous par 5 could not be repeated and Big George had to settle for a par and a nice nett 67.

In 5th place and also with a nett 67 was David Ewing. David started the most solid of all with a par at the first, second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth before a bogey at 7 followed by 2 more pars at 8 and 9 would see David 1 over par for opening nine holes.

A much different tale was to unfold on back nine with David starting with a triple bogey 7 at the 10th followed by a bogey at 11.

On the 12th hole a par was recorded before bogeys at 13, 14 and 15. Another par at 16 would be followed by a double bogey at 17 before a nice closing par on 18th would see 2 totally different nine holes but nonetheless a nice nett 67 was still recorded.

The best gross of the day went to John Cullen with a 1 over par 73. John started his round well with pars at first four holes before a triple bogey 7 at the 5th would see 3 shots go in one hole. A birdie at 7 would be followed by pars at 8 and 9 to see John record a 2 over par 37 on the front nine. Eight pars and a birdie at 16 would see John take 36 strokes for second nine and record a nice tidy gross 67.

In the sections 0-12 was won by Patrick Lavery with a nett 68. In 13-18 section Martin McConville triumphed with a nett 68 also.

In high section Colm Doyle triumphed also with another nett 68. Best senior citizen on the day went to immediate past captain Brian Brady with a nett 70. Best junior on the day was Dean Connelly with a nett 71.

In the team competitions the Junior Cowdy were held to a 2-2 draw at home. The Ulster Cup team won 4 1/2 to 2 1/2 and look good going into away match and in the Sam Rutherford Silverwood hold a 24 hole advantage going into away leg.

These teams are all in Quarter finals of their respective competitions so all at Silverwood wish them well in their away legs.
