John a convincing winner in time trial

JOHN Heverin was a very convincing winner of last weeks interclub time trial at Derrymacash.

It was his second win in successive weeks, in a time of 20 minutes 36 seconds.

However John had a far more successful outing on Saturday at Dundrod, where a very competitive cycle race was held over the Grand Prix circuit an hour before the motorbikes took to the road.

At Dundrod, John broke clear on the first lap in the company of Coleraine’s John Madden and Ballymena man Conor McAllister.

The trio quickly established a sizeable gap and were never headed. At the finish McAllister won the sprint just a length ahead of Heverin. Michael Murray, the other Clann Eireann rider in the race, was fifth.

Elsewhere, there were six Clann cyclists competing in the Billy Stewart Cup race at Derrymacash on Sunday.

In the main 50 mile event Martin McConville was prominent near the front of the large field for several laps, but did not figure in the top placings at the finish.

In the shorter support race over 35 miles Kenny McConaghy claimed tenth spot in the big bunch sprint.

Also in the support race Harry Martin who is having a late run of good form, excelled again to finish in the same group as McConaghy, despite giving away quite a few years of age to most other riders.
