John Davis Cup competition staged at Rathmore Golf Club

FIFTY pairs of golfers turned out on Sunday at the Valley Course to fight for the John Davis Cup and unconfirmed sources believe this is the first time in many years that Mark McClelland has featured on the top of a leaderboard at Rathmore.

Perhaps it was the steadying influence of veteran Brian O’Connor (14) that brought out the best in Mark for this four ball better ball event as they won with a terrific net 62, including birdies from 6 handicap Mark at 4, 8, 12, 13 and 18.

Every stroke saved was needed as only countback secured the win from father and son duo Wayne (+4) and Jackie Telford (8) who had 32 shots back as compared to the winners’ 30. Team Telford’s Wayne had a remarkable run of four consecutive birdies from 4 to 7 added to birdies at 2, 10, 13, 16 and 18, he birdied 50% of the 18 hole course!

Jimmy birdied seventeen and Alan added birdies at eight and nine. A shot further back on 64 were the Brothers Donnelly. Connor and Eoin, both playing off six had a good steady round with birdies for Connor at 1, 10 and 18 and one from Eoin at 13.
