John is a new face in the winners' circle

THE match and handicap committee ran a Saturday Sweep competition for members at the weekend.

This was a stop-gap measure between the ending of the summer competitions and the beginning of this year’s Winter League.

With a magnificent effort of 44 points a new name entered the winners circle. This great score was attained by fifteen handicapper John Hartnett. This player had a consistent 22 and 21 points on each side of the course.

A birdie at the fourth and pars at holes one, three, five, six and nine were prime examples of his early outstanding play. More of the same ensued on the back nine as well. A birdie at the tenth and a par at the thirteenth steadied the nerves. He concluded his round with a trio of pars and ultimately emerged a couple of points ahead of his closest challengers.

Another newcomer Paul Carlin was runner-up with a six under par tally of 42 points. This twenty-three handicapper reached the turn with an average total of 17 points. However he showed a richer vein of form on the incoming nine and accrued an exceptional tally of 25 points for the nine.

The third net prize on the day went to Barry Fitzpatrick. This twenty handicap player took the honours with a similar effort of 42 points. Barry’s steady golf was much in evidence with 21 points over each of the nines.

On this delightful October day both Shane Magee and David Sutton scored 35 gross points over the eighteen holes. Courtesy of a better back nine the category award went to Shane. This three handicapper went through the front nine with an equal amount of birdies, pars and bogeys on his card. The birdies came at holes one, three and six and remarkably after making the birdie at each hole he immediately dropped a shot on the next hole. Such are the vagaries of golf! His play on the inward nine was almost faultless. It comprised eight pars to accompany a bogey on the sixteenth. With 18 and 17 gross points for the nines he duly took the gross honour.

With an effort of 40 points seven handicapper Paddy Meehan captured the low section award. Vice-Captain Paddy scored 19 and 21 points over the nines.

With a tally of 41 points Eamon McCausland grabbed the middle section prize. This fourteen handicapper had a steady 20 and 21 points over the respective nines. Pars on holes two, three, six, seven and eight were his trademark scores on the opening nine. On the back nine a birdie at the seventeenth and pars at holes ten, twelve and fourteen provided a winning platform for this veteran member.

Finally the high section prize went to Richard Dawson. This twenty-one handicap golfer triumphed with a total of 40 points. Richard headed to the tenth tee with 16 points on his card and it required a strong effort on the back nine to succeed. He was up to the task and an enterprising effort of 24 points on this side of the course put him into the winning circle. On the day he was best served by vital pars at holes eight, ten, eleven, thirteen and seventeen.
