Johnston shines at Kirkistown

COLERAINE rider Mark Johnston had a brace of fine results at last weekend's Irish Superbike RACES, which were held at the Kirkistown Circuit in County Down.

Untimed practice saw the top six riders covered by just 1.5 seconds Marshall Neill being the quickest with Johnston in fifth. Johnston was having some problems with his PMD STeel Erecting Honda 1000cc and had a new quick shifter fitted for timed practice where he improved his position and ended up second on the grid less than 1/100 th of a second behind the still fastest Neill.

Just one second now covered the top six riders and set the scene for what was to be an exciting days racing. Race one for the superbikes was wet with the track greasy and saw the Coleraine man get a poor start. As conditions were far from perfect Mark went for what he would describe "a steady run".

Over the ten lap race positions changed a number of times, and at the chequered flag it was Neill who took the win with johnston just over three seconds behind the race winner in fifth place.

The feature race of the day was the King of Kirkistown race which was again won by Marshall Neill with Brian McCormick second and the Coleraine man in third, just two seconds covered the top three racers in what was a very exciting race for both spectators and riders.

Mark was well pleased with his results especially his podium finish in the feature race. Thanks go to the sponsors of the PMD Honda Mounted Rider, PM Deighan, Dunlop Tyres, Held Racing Leathers, Nicolas Jackson (The Vinyl Touch), Coleraine, and McKillop Motorcycles, Derrykeighan.
