Jordan helps Great Britain claim gold

Larne’s Jordan Mitchell competed in the recent European Archery Youth Championships in Nykøbing Denmark where helped Great Britain win gold in the junior men’s team event.

Jordan, the only competitor from Northern Ireland, was one of 315 archers from 33 countries who took part in the competition which was divided into two different bow styles – compound and recurve while male and female were divided into cadet (U18) and junior (U21).

He qualified first in the Junior Compound Men’s division, with a score of 692 out of a possible 720, shooting an 80cm target face 50m away. He was delighted to have outscored top European junior Mike Schloesser from the Netherlands by a single point.

As they were seeded one and two, both received a bye into the round of the head to head elimination matches. Jordan was also then selected by Great Britain team manager Barry Eley, to participate in the Mixed Team event on Friday with England’s Zoe Coggins.

In the Individual Elimination matches the 18-year-old’s he saw off Spain’s Diego Nieto Taladriz before suffering a narrow quarter-final defeat to Michele Nencioni of Italy.

Jordan was joined by England’s Adam Outram and Jake Bunce in the Junior Men’s Team Event and this talented Great Britain trio were seeded first, just one point in front of Denmark. They automatically received a bye into the semi-final where they met Turkey.

The talented teen helped Team GB to a five-point win over Turkey in this elimination match, scoring 229 out of 240 to Turkey’s 224, taking them to the final on Saturday against the home nation Denmark.

On finals day at Nykøbing Harbour, Team GB’s Jordan, Adam and Jake stepped up to the mark to defeat home nation Denmark 230–223, making them Junior European Champions and receiving gold medals for their efforts.

Qualifying first in Denmark and second in Croatia won Jordan another title and Gold Medal for overall 2012 European Junior Outdoor Cup Series Winner.

In the Mixed Team elimination day, Jordan and Zoe lost out to Danes who then went on to win the gold medal, defeating Turkey 147 to 140.

Mitchell was due to be in Guernsey this week with the Northern Ireland senior team at the Euro nations and Regional Commonwealth Championships on July 20.
