Joy for Joe at Cushendall Captain's Day

JOE O'Neill Jnr posted 42 points to win Malachy Delargy's Captain's Prize at Cushendall, and also secured a timely boost before Friday's Jimmy Bruen Ulster Section semi-final against County Cavan.

The 31-year-old, a BT Senior Manager, had his handicap slimmed to seven after clinching the prestige Captain's award by one stroke from 15-handicapper Phil Sharpe.

Two points further back was Kieran McNaugthon. Four-handicapper Alastair McGregor took the Gross honour with 32 points.

Cushendall's Bruen team, through to the provincial semis for a first time, faces a tough test against the experienced 2008 champions at Edenmore.

The Antrim Coast squad includes, along with Joe O'Neill Jnr, 16-year-old club champion Conor McAlister, Patrick O'Hara, Henry McAlister, Tony Hoey, Tommy Campbell, Leonard McKeegan Jnr, Martin McCausland, Ally McCambridge, Nigel McAuley, Paul Delargy and Conor McCambridge.

The Cavan town 10-man team, including quality shot-about partnerships such as Eddie Kellett and Brian Tighe and Matt Reilly and Pauric McEntee, cruised through a quarter-final examination against Galgorm Castle, while Cushendall survived a nail-biter against Banbridge. Portstewart play Tandragee in the other semi-final, to be completed at Banbridge by Monday next (July 26).
