Jujitsu club grab Olympic spirit

WITH the Olympics in full flight, Maghera Jujitsu Club took the Olympic spirit literally, and held an open grappling competition in Maghera Leisure Centre recently.

Jujitsu students, both beginners and experienced, young and old, took part in the tournament. Some travelled from regional areas including Draperstown, Swatragh, Portglenone, Castledawson amongst others.

While Jujitsu is in essence an ancient form of unarmed combat, with roots in Japan, it has been adapted to suit modern self defence scenarios, as well as introduction of various competitive elements.

“Recent coverage of Judo in the Olympics reminds us that Judo was actually taken from Jujitsu, and made into a pure sport, as were some other martial art forms. Jujitsu, as well as being tailored for multiple attackers and real life situations, has also found significant use in the ever more popular MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)” says Paul Creighton, Head Coach. Paul adds “Our Jujitsu classes are more of an every day approach to self defence, and students grade every 4-6 months, with a view to attaining a black belt within 5 years”.

Jujitsu is open to students from 5 years old. Adult classes cater from 14 years upwards. If you are interested in finding out more, call Paul on 07766703038 or visit www.magherajujitsu.com for more details.
