Katrin a winner at junior tournament

IT was a successful day for the younger competitors in the finals of the Dunedin junior tennis tournament held in Lurgan Park.

The Lurgan club was well represented. Katrin Ilieva won the girls under 12 singles and Sophie Murray reached both the under 16 and under 18 girls’ finals.

Stephanie Oliver and David Acum got to the semi-finals of the under 16 girls and boys respectively. Thomas Muldoon reached the quarter-finals of the under 14s and Emma Coulter won the under 12 girls’ plate competition.

The under 18 boys final was a high class match between two 14-year-olds with Aaron Stubbs, Donaghadee, beating Peter Bothwell of Downshire, Hillsborough in straight sets.

Although only 12-years-old, Karola Bejenaru, Windsor, won both the under 16 and under 18 girls’ events, beating Sophie Murray, Lurgan, in both finals.

The under 14 girls’ final was a closer match, with Aoibhinn Kelly, CIYMS, avenging her brother’s earlier defeat by beating Eva Lennox, ATT Ballymena, 6-3, 6-3.

The under 12 girls’ final produced a home win with Katrin Ilieva of the host club defeating Eva May O’Hagan, Newry, 6-1, 6-2.
