Keith wins Carrick na Cule Cup

PORTSTEWART golfer Keith Walls held his nerve to score 39 points on Bank Holiday Monday, winning the Carrick na Cule Cup by one point.

Keith birdied the second, fourth seventh and fifteenth, did not score at three and twelve, and pipped Paddy Begley to the trophy.

Paddy balanced a birdie at two with a blank at nine to return 38 points. A point behind this came Mark Hemphill on 37 including birdies at seven and eight. Gerry Hassan (13) shot 36 for fourth spot even with a blank at the third.

A net 65 took the Montagu Cup at Portstewart GC on Saturday when Sean Hartin went round in seven under his (then) handicap of 23. Sean was two strokes clear of Stewart Gillespie (18) who returned a net 67 including a double bogey at the 11th.

The Walls family was represented again by Geoff (5) who won the low section with his net 69. A super level par gross of 36 back included bogeys at 10 and 11 with balancing birdies at the two par fives.

The high section winner was Robin Walker (14) with a net 68. A triple bogey at the first and a double at three didn’t rattle Robin as he returned in three over for the last nine.

Gerald Bradley (2) birdied the first and ninth to be one under par gross for the front nine and covered the return nine in one over to win the best gross prize with his resulting 70.
